The Newberry was founded on July 1, 1887 and opened for business on September 6 of that year. The Newberry’s establishment came about because of a contingent provision in the will of Chicago businessman Walter L. George William Bonnell, journalist and soldier, was raised in central New York state and later moved to the south where he became a newspaper editor. Bonnell arrived in Texas in 1836 and was appointed Commissioner of Indian Affairs by President Sam Houston.
